Why is tire width measured in millimetres but rim size measured in inches? Why use two different measurement systems instead of one?

So that Myanmar doesn’t get confused.

I remember when we called it Burma, because they were dicks. Then they elected Suu Kyi and we decided it was okay to call it Myanmar, but I kept calling it Burma, then I finally broke myself of it, but they kept persecuting Muslims.

For the same reason we measure penises in inches.

For that matter, why use aspect ratio instead of just listing the inner and outer diameters and the width?

I measure mine in centimetres. Sounds more impressive.

I just need someone to tell. :(

Engine outputs are more confusing to me.

I’m used to bhp, starting to get used to ps, and then this thing Kw comes in.

150 bhp, Brake Horse Power =

152.1 PS, Pferdestärke (horse strength) =

113.5 Kw, Kilowatts.

It gets more confusing when you realize that lug nut patterns come in inch and metric versions, too. You can have a 4x100mm lug pattern on a 15" wheel with said tires on them. It’s crazy.

I have wondered why wheel sizes are always in inches, though. Clearly, at some point, imperial wheel sizes beget imperial sized tires, which eventually set tires/wheels in these sizes as the standard.

I’m going to suspect that network effects have something to do with it. You can mount a tire that has a metric section width on an inch wheel, but you can’t mount a tire that has a metric bead seat diameter on an inch wheel.

As Distraxi mentions in another comment, metric wheels - Michelin TRX - actually did happen, but didn’t take off. (Although, TRX was intentionally designed around incompatible metric sizes because the bead seat was also incompatible, more than to metricate tire sizing.)

And, I suspect that the US and UK have something to do with this, both having such influential automotive industries.

Of course, one way to go is to simply do what the bicycle industry’s tried to do - use inch sizes in some places, but report them in metric. (Of course, bicycles also tend to report diameter of the tire , not the wheel, in most legacy sizes. ISO-ETRTO goes for section width, then wheel bead seat diameter, though.)

FT-Lbs for torque, europe uses newton-meters, how the fuck am I supposed to understand a newton meter.

BMW tried metric wheels for a while. It didn’t go too well.

If you can understand that a foot-pound is the torque produced by one pound of force applied at a radius of one foot, why is it so hard to understand a newton-meter is the torque produced by one newton of force applied at a radius of one meter?
